The plight of the dhimmis, an immense but almost completely ignored ongoing scandal that continues in Muslim countries today;The plight of women under Sharia provisions, similar to conditions imposed on dhimmis, in the denial of equal rights and dignity;
Unius REI @UniusRei
Before it’s too late for Western Europe and the United States, which gave birth to the traditions of freedom and equality of rights for all that shine today as lights in the entire world, this JIHAD SHARIAH GENOCIDE must be stopped.
Unius REI @UniusRei
They have succeeded in confusing millions in the West into mistaking honesty and truthfulness for bigotry, and self-defense for oppression.
Unius REI @UniusRei
While jihadist groups, even with their global diffusion, are not strong enough to realize this goal by themselves, they have a potent and destructive ally, a genuine fifth column, in the dhimmi academics and dhimmi journalists they have recruited in the West.
Unius REI @UniusRei
Tens of millions have been uprooted from their homes. Tens of millions have been stripped of their cultural identity. To continue to gloss over the destruction wrought by jihad ideology and its attendant evil of dhimmitude is today to play into the hands of jihadists
Unius REI @UniusRei
But in this era of global terrorism it must be said: this silence, this distortion, has become deadly. Before 9/11 it was easy to ignore and whitewash dhimmitude, but the atrocities changed the situation forever. In jihads throughout history, untold millions have died.
Unius REI @UniusRei
One must not point out the depredations of jihad and dhimmitude; to do so would offend the multiculturalist ethos that prevails everywhere today. To do so would endanger chances for peace and rapprochement between civilizations all too ready to clash.
Unius REI @UniusRei
Spearheaded by dhimmi academics and self-serving advocacy groups, that same attitude of chastened subservience has entered into Western academic study of Islam, and from there into journalism, school textbooks, and the popular discourse.
0 1 1
Unius REI @UniusRei
It was almost unheard-of to find dhimmis speaking out against their oppressors; to do so would have been suicide. For centuries dhimmi communities in the Islamic world learned to live in peace with their Muslim overlords by acquiescing to their subservience.
Unius REI @UniusRei
If dhimmis complained about their inferior status, institutionalized humiliation, or poverty, their masters voided their contract and regarded them as enemies of Islam, fair game as objects of violence. Consequently, dhimmis were generally cowed into silence and worse.

Christian in Pakistan Beaten to Death at Hospital after Doctor Refuses to Treat Pregnant Sister
ICC Note: Sunil Saleem, a Pakistani Christian in Lahore, was beaten to death by hospital security guards and doctors after an anti-Christian incident involving Saleem’s pregnant sister. According to Saleem’s family, the doctor on duty refused to help Saleem’s sister who was experiencing labor pains. When confronted, the doctor used derogatory language and assaulted Saleem’s sister, instigating the conflict. Discrimination against Christians in Pakistan is widespread and often leads to violent altercations.
03/29/2018 Pakistan (Morning Star News) – Medical staff and security guards at a major government hospital in Lahore, Pakistan on Monday (March 26) killed a Christian father of four and injured five members of his family, including the pregnant sister he had brought because she was in labor, sources said.
Anil Saleem said that he, his brother Sunil Saleem and other relatives had taken their pregnant sister Kiran Kashif to the emergency labor ward of the Government Services Institute of Medical Sciences (commonly known as Services Hospital), because she was suffering labor pains.
“Kiran went to the doctor on duty, Dr. Saira, who was playing with her cell phone while sipping on tea,” Anil Saleem said. “Dr. Saira told Kiran to wait outside until she finished her tea. We waited for some time, but since Kiran was experiencing severe pain, she again went inside the ward to request for immediate attention.”
As soon as the woman in labor approached Dr. Saira, she started cursing her for not waiting and told a nurse to attend her, he said.
“When my sister protested against the rude behavior, the doctor started slapping her, throwing her on the floor,” Anil Saleem said. “She asked my sister how dare a Chuhri [a derogatory term for Christians] question her order?”
On hearing the commotion, Anil Saleem, his brother, brother-in-law Kashif Ashiq and cousins Raza Guddu and Kashif Robin entered the ward, but as soon as she saw them, Dr. Saira shouted to the other doctors and security guards to lock the ward’s doors from the inside and “teach these Christians a lesson,” Anil Saleem said.
“Around 15 to 20 paramedical staff and security guards and eight to 10 young doctors, including Dr. Salman, Dr. Irfan, Dr. Hasan and Dr. Sahi lunged at us with iron rods, chairs, leather belts and other things and started beating us,” he said. “Sunil, a police constable in the National Highway and Motorway Police, tried his best to placate the assailants but they continued to beat him mercilessly, kicking and punching him in the groin and chest until he fell unconscious.”
Anil Saleem and the three other men tried to defend themselves, but they were greatly outnumbered and were saved only when police arrived, he said.
He said that the doctors also beat the crew of a local news channel who happened to be in the hospital at that time; published reports indicate the altercation spilled into the hospital corridor, which they caught on film.
After a delay in treatment, Sunil Saleem died for lack of timely emergency medical assistance, he said.

Persecution Watch countries: Beyond the Top 50
Beyond the top 50 on Open Doors’ 2018 World Watch List, the charity lists another eight countries where the persecution of Christians is “high”. Below is an explanation of each, provided by Open Doors’ World Watch Research unit.
Comoros
How are Christians persecuted?
Islamic oppression: The Constitution states that all public policies must be based on Islamic beliefs. Some legal provisions for religious freedom exist, but these are directed more towards foreigners than native Christians. Since the referendum on the Constitution in 2009, it has become visible that residents are adopting a more radical view of Islam, especially on the islands of Anjouan and Moheli. The rise of radical Islamic sympathies among the population at large, government officials, religious leaders and Muslim youth groups in particular, causes anxiety among Christians.
Dictatorial paranoia: Since independence (from France) in 1975, Comoros has seen at least 20 coups or attempted coups. This history of violence has left the country desperately poor, and at times on the brink of disintegration. It has also led to a paranoid state of mind among government officials. Considering the peaceful February-May 2016 election and transition, one might say that the country has become truly democratic. However, that would be a mischaracterisation. The country’s rulers are still known for suppressing freedom of association, religion, and expression – this is particularly true when it comes to restricting Christians’ freedom in all walks of life.
By whom?
Muslim religious leaders are at the forefront. In mosques and madrassas, they regularly teach anti-Christian sentiments.
Government officials have their share in this, as they obligate parents to send their children to madrassas. They also prohibit Christians from publicly engaging in religious discussion or preaching.
Family and community members discriminate and harass suspected converts. They also deny worshipping space for Christians in general.
An ultra-conservative group of Islamic scholars known locally as Djaulas (many of whom trained in Pakistan) is pushing the country to a more radical view of Sharia (Islamic law) in the country and are against Christians.
Which Christians are affected?
All Christian communities in Comoros face persecution, although the level and the types of persecution may differ. Christians are expected not to discuss their faith in public. In some parts of the country, radical groups intimidate Christians with violence. However, violence is not common in the country, although this might change in the future. Proselytism related to any religion except Islam is illegal and converts can be prosecuted. Converts to Christianity from a Muslim background face the severest difficulties at the hands of family, community leaders and government officials. They are put under pressure not to practise their faith, leaving them little option but to live out their faith in secret.
Cuba
How are Christians persecuted?
Communist and post-Communist oppression: Due to a progressive opening to the world market in recent years, the main socialist aspects of the regime have gradually decreased, which has meant a major move away from the State’s original policies. Nonetheless, since the country is still ruled according to Communist postulates, the idea of a paternalistic state remains and continues to apply a socialist economic model, with a predominance of the central level and the state enterprise. This provides no possibility of entrepreneurship for its citizens and means the continued censorship of independent journalism and freedom of conscience and the limitations of most civil and social rights in general.
Dictatorial paranoia: Cuba has in practice become a Communist dictatorship. Thus, Raul Castro’s government is trying to control the private and public life of Cubans and any indication of opposition to the regime by Christians or others will be investigated and dealt with harshly. The desire to maintain a system of total monitoring has resulted in excessive repression and the infringement of citizens’ rights; anyone contradicting or questioning the leaders and their power – whether for reasons of faith or otherwise – suffers relentless harassment, is eventually classed as an enemy of the regime and is targeted by the State.
Organised corruption and crime: Due to the strict application of the law and the severe penalties imposed, there are no large crime networks on the Island. However, corruption has become a part of daily life at every level. Accessing the black market and bribing officials is very often the only way to get things done. So when the government wants to build a case against Christians, they can easily accuse them of buying on the black market.
Secular Intolerance: The government restricts groups seeking to defend human rights, regarding itself the source of all norms and values. Anyone disagreeing is seen as an enemy of the regime.
By whom?
The government seeks to control every activity on the island, including church activities – through the Office of Religious Affairs (ORA) – which even means a strict monitoring and censorship of all sermon content. The main method used by the government to maintain power is the indoctrination of children and youth. This is the best method to win future supporters and is the reason education through the state system is mandatory. No other kind of education is possible in the country.
Also, normal citizens sympathising with the Communist Party will inform the authorities about actions taken “against the postulates of the regime”; as will religious groups such as “santeros” (who practice Santeria); and the extended family, who sometimes betray and accuse their “dissident” relatives, fearing State reprisals.
Which Christians are affected?
All churches are affected by government control. Last year saw an increase in arrests of Christians attending unregistered meetings and Christians expressing disagreement with the regime. Also, some Christians considered to be opponents of the regime were removed from their jobs.
On 20 February 2017, police detained over 50 ‘Ladies in White’ – a peaceful opposition movement founded in 2003 by female relatives of 75 jailed dissidents – as they were on their way to attend a church service. The women protest against the imprisonments by attending Catholic Mass each Sunday wearing white clothes (symbolising peace) and silently marching through the streets in a group afterwards.
On 20 March 2017, the leader of the Christian Liberation Movement (MCL) was sentenced to three years in prison after publicly criticising Fidel Castro, shortly after the latter’s death.
On 27 April 2017, a 20-year-old Cuban student returning from the United States was arrested by police at the airport, accused of terrorism, and later expelled from the university. He belonged to a Christian-based academic society and had submitted a report on religious-freedom violations in Cuba to the United States International Religious Freedom Commission (USCIRF).
Kyrgyzstan
How are Christians persecuted?
Dictatorial paranoia: No religious activities beyond state-run and state-controlled institutions are allowed. In 2009 a new Religion Law was introduced, bringing many restrictions for Christians. Since 2015 a new draft law is under discussion, which would make registration of congregations almost impossible, as it would require at least 500 church members.
Islamic oppression: Kyrgyzstan is much more traditional than many other countries in Central Asia. Pressure on Christians coming from Islamic circles is particularly aimed at Christian converts from a Muslim background. If indigenous people convert to Christianity, they will experience pressure and occasionally physical violence from their families, friends and local community to force them to return to Islam.
By whom?
Government officials, ethnic group leaders, extended family, non-Christian religious leaders and normal citizens each put pressure on Christians, especially those from a Muslim background.
Which Christians are affected?
Christians from a Muslim background will take care not to draw unwanted attention to themselves, since family, friends and community will do their utmost to make converts recant their faith. Converts have been locked up in their homes to pressurise them into recanting. Known converts and non-traditional Protestants who are actively evangelising are monitored by the community. For church groups, registration is obligatory, but the biggest hurdle is that 200 signatures are currently required to obtain registration, a demand that practically no church can meet.
During 2017, one female convert to Christianity was killed by her brother; one church was attacked in Tokmak; one pastor was arrested; there were two reports of women being forced to marry (a common practice in Kyrgyzstan); 30 Christians were beaten (most by their families); and 18 Christians had to go into hiding.
Morocco
How are Christians persecuted?
Islamic oppression: Although Muslim-majority Morocco is considered to be a relatively tolerant country (with the intensity and frequency of persecution being less compared to many other countries in the region), nevertheless Christians suffer persecution from both the state and society at large. A recurrent problem for Christians who are open about their faith relates to Article 220 of the Penal Code, which criminalises “shaking the faith” of a Muslim. This puts many Christians who talk to others about their faith at risk of criminal prosecution and arrest. However, last year Morocco’s High Religious Committee ruled that apostasy is not an offense that should be published by death.
By whom?
The State – through restrictions – and radical Muslims within society. In rural areas, the pressure coming from the extended family and the community at large can also be considerable, especially on converts from Islam.
Which Christians are affected?
Persecution mainly affects Christian converts from a Muslim background, although restrictions also apply to the small historical Catholic and expatriate communities. Many Moroccans who have converted to Christianity live in urban areas and enjoy relatively more freedom than Christians in rural areas. There were a few instances last year of Christians being forced to leave their homes and go into hiding and even leave the country. Political analysts have also observed that while the law only punishes proselytism, converts to Christianity can be punished in other ways, for instance through losing child custody and inheritance rights.
Advocates for the rights of Christians have been targeted for violent attack by radical Islamic militants. On 4 November 2016, Mohammed Saeed Zao, a well-known activist for the rights of Christians, survived a knife-attack in Casablanca. Although the incident was reported to the police, they refused to take up the issue, calling him a troublemaker.
Niger
How are Christians persecuted?
Islamic oppression: through radical Islamic activity, and family and business life.
By whom?
Militant groups like Boko Haram and radical Islamic teachers who influence ordinary members of society. Ordinary citizens and state officials (in some parts of the country and at the local level) also contribute to the persecution of Christians.
Which Christians are affected?
Niger is home to three categories of Christianity: historical Christian communities; communities of converts to Christianity (from a Muslim background) and non-traditional Christian communities. Sometimes the pressure on Christians only affects converts – for instance, ostracisation by family members, including denial of inheritance rights and also abduction and forced marriage. Sometimes all three types of Christianity are affected, for instance in renting properties for residence or business purposes.
The persecution of Christians has worsened in some parts of the country, while the situation has improved in others. In places like Niamey, the capital city, the treatment of Christians has improved slightly. However, in areas where the influence of Islamists is prominent, such as Diffa, it has increasingly become difficult for Christians, particularly those who are businesspeople. In Diffa and Tahoua regions the situation is worsening because militant Islamic groups are in control of some areas. In regions like Zinder, Christians suffer from harassment by ordinary citizens. In Maradi, Tahoua, Dosso, Niamey and Tillabery the effect of such harassment is minimised due to the campaign for peaceful cohabitation between Muslims and Christians organised by the government.
Russia
How are Christians persecuted?
Dictatorial paranoia: Under President Putin, a former KGB officer, more and more restrictions are being introduced in the legislation. The authoritarian government continues to restrict freedom of expression, freedom of assembly, freedom of religion and other human rights.
Islamic oppression: This is the most important persecution dynamic in the Caucasus region. In the various republics on the northern slopes of the Caucasus range (Dagestan, Chechnya, Ingushetia, Kabardino-Balkaria and Karachay-Cherkessia) Islamic militants are fighting the Russian army to establish a Muslim emirate. Many ethnic Russians have left the area due to the violence. Churches have seen the number of their members drop. Christian converts from a Muslim background have to keep their faith secret for fear of being executed. The influence of radical Islam is also growing in Tatarstan, a region 800 kilometres east of Moscow.
By whom?
Government officials at various levels, normal citizens and political parties (especially the United Russia party of President Putin) are drivers of Dictatorial paranoia throughout the Russian Federation. Christians with a Muslim background experience additional (and much more intense) pressure from their Muslim environment, which is caused by ethnic group leaders, non-Christian religious leaders and extended family.
Which Christians are affected?
Officially, Russia is a secular state, but the regime openly courts the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) to the disadvantage of other denominations (which are often regarded as foreign). In the Muslim regions, the rulers explicitly court Sunni Islam instead. Russia has one region where very conservative Islam is dominant: the North Caucasus. There, pressure on all Christians, but most specifically on converts from Islam, is very high. Conversion is strongly opposed. Many Christians have fled this region over the past decades. Converts living, for example, in Chechnya and Dagestan are considered to be traitors to their national identity, since Christianity is associated with the Russian occupiers, the ‘enemy’ in the guerrilla war that has been going on for decades.
Non-traditional Christian communities have also frequently been targeted by the ROC for “stealing” congregants. Protestant groups are often regarded as heretics by the ROC and as un-Russian, Western spies by the State. In Muslim areas, these Christians are often targeted because they are suspected of being active in evangelism.
At least 10 Christians were physically attacked in 2017 and 20 Christians briefly detained by Russian police, but none of them were sentenced to jail. One Christian from India and two from South Korea were extradited. One church and one Christian cemetery were damaged. Russian troops also demolished a dilapidated Polish Catholic church and cemetery in Tsebelda, Abkhazia.
In December 2016, the pastor of an unregistered Council of Churches Baptist congregation in Zabaikalsk Region was charged for not notifying the authorities of his group’s activities. This carries a fine of up to 500 Rubles (less than $10).
Tanzania
How are Christians persecuted?
Islamic oppression: The majority of mainland Tanzanians are Christians, and the majority of the population on the island of Zanzibar are Muslims. In recent years, Islamic oppression has become more prominent, originating from Zanzibar and moving across the coast of mainland Tanzania. The radical Islamic group Uamsho (a Swahili acronym for the Association for Islamic Mobilisation and Propagation) uses Zanzibar as a springboard to further its radical Islamic agenda in Tanzania. Uamsho and related groups aim to establish an Islamic state that includes Zanzibar and a significant section of Tanzanian mainland along the coast. In this new, would-be Muslim state, there would be no place for Christians or people with other religious beliefs. It appears that the idea of this Islamic state is gaining popularity among Muslims even on the mainland. The influence of the radicals has even influenced the drafters of the Constitution (to be ratified by referendum) to include a provision that allows the establishment of Sharia courts in the whole country. At the moment Uamsho seems to have lost momentum, as it leaders have been arrested or left their leadership role. However, the ideology it has implanted will continue to create problems both for Christians and the government.
By whom?
Those who subscribe to the radical ideology propagated by some Wahhabists in the country and members of Uamsho; Muslim family and community leaders, especially when it comes to converts from Islam; government officials who buy into the Wahhabist ideology; and some ethnic leaders.
Which Christians are affected?
All Christian communities in Tanzania are experiencing persecution to some degree, but Christians with a Muslim background on Zanzibar are affected the most severely, where bullying, harassment and sometimes physical attacks have been observed. There have been waves of attacks against Christians and their property, as well as churches, over the last four years or so. On 30 April 2017, a Catholic church in the coastal region was broken into and property set on fire. A note was left containing a death-threat.
Uganda
How are Christians persecuted?
Islamic oppression: Through the rise in radical Islamic activities in the country, and particularly the Allied Democratic Forces. The Tabliqs (a sect of puritanical Muslims whose members portray themselves as Muslim evangelists) have continued to advance the cause of Islam in areas like Mbale, Kasese, Arua/Yumbe. From its base in East Democratic Republic of Congo, ADF, an armed force established by Tabliqs, has been creating fear among Christians. The group has recruited many youths from Uganda. The presence of the group is creating an environment of intolerance. Ugandan Muslims were not intolerant in the past. But, those who sympathise with ADF are preaching the idea of having an Islamic state in Uganda (and in a part of the DRC), and this is taking away the culture of tolerance. In the eastern part of the country, there has been pressure on Christians from the Muslim community, which opposes the presence of churches in their areas. Converts are often targeted, as are church leaders.
By whom?
Non-Christian religious leaders, fanatical groups, some governed officials, some church leaders and family members (especially when a member becomes a convert from Islam to Christianity).
Which Christians are affected?
All Christian groups living in areas affected by the presence of Islamic extremists face persecution. Converts in particular face major problems and find it difficult to live a normal life – owning Christian materials or discussing their faith with family members or community members can lead to expulsion, serious physical attacks or even death. Bullying and harassment are very common in eastern parts of the country.
Last year two Christians were killed by radical Muslims and two churches were attacked and damaged.

– Jorge: Maria, tua Madre, aveva molta fede.

The Church in Egypt is one of the oldest in the world and is believed to have been founded by St Mark in the first days of the Early Church.1 In addition to its important place in church history as one of the earliest Christian communities that goes all the way back to the first century AD, the Church in Egypt (which now consists of a variety of denominations) has a special significance in the contemporary Christian landscape due to the fact that it is the largest Christian community in the Arab world.2 The Church in Egypt has faced existential threats for most of its history.3 While these threats have had various waves of intensity over the years, they have always been present. A series of violent attacks against Egyptian Christians since December 2016 by the group known as Islamic State indicates that this persecution still persists through to the present day. Taking this into account, this article seeks to draw attention to the threats faced by Egyptian Christians and to emphasise the need for support for this Christian community under siege.
Violent attacks against Egyptian Christians
Since the 7th century Christians have often been relegated to second-class status within Egypt and have faced varying levels of violent persecution.4 With the establishment and rise of radical Islamic groups, especially in the second half of the 20th century, Egyptian Christians have continued to face renewed risks of violent persecution. The 1970s and 1990s are often mentioned as decades in which the killing of Christians by Islamic militants were particularly visible.5 Although the Arab Spring uprisings had given rise to some optimism in 2011 about the prospect of equality and the full inclusion of Christians in society, these hopes have proved to be unfounded and naïve.
Since the onset of the Arab Spring uprisings and the turbulence they brought to the Arab world, the Egyptian Church seems to be facing a serious and, one might even say, existential threat. The last four years (2013-2017) have been particularly difficult and deadly for Egyptian Christians, with a significant spike in the number of violent attacks by radical Islamic groups. However, it would be a mistake to assume that Christians have only been killed by fanatic Islamic militants. In October 2011, for instance, 28 Christians were killed in Cairo when the army tried to disperse Christians protesting about the government’s failure to protect churches against attacks.6
Some attribute the upsurge of violence since the Arab Spring to the fact that “many of the country’s jihadists, held captive under former President Hosni Mubarak, were freed during the revolution that led to his ouster in 2011”.7 Another explanation for the rise of attacks against Christians, particularly since 2013, points to the Coptic Orthodox Church’s support for President Mohamed Morsi’s removal from power.8 When Morsi, who had the backing of the Muslim Brotherhood, was ousted from office by the army, the Coptic Orthodox Church endorsed this move. Some of the attacks against Christians in Egypt since 2013 appear to have been a backlash against this perceived support.
Highlighting the growing level of violence against Christians in the past few years, Pope Tawadros II of the Coptic Orthodox Church pointed out that violent attacks against Christians have been occurring with a frequency of nearly one attack per month over the past three years.9 Furthermore, according to the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights, there have been at least 77 documented instances of violent attacks on Coptic Christians between 2011 and 2016 in one governorate alone.10 Human Rights Watch reported that in 2013 at least 42 churches and other Christian organisations were subjected to attacks, with their buildings being burned and damaged.11 Others reported that 52 churches and church-affiliated institutions were attacked within a period of 24 hours.12 These reports also indicate that homes and business owned by churches were also subjected to attacks in August 2013.13
After a lull in violence since the summer of 2013, another spate of violence against Christians started towards the end of 2016. For instance, in December 2016 a bomb attack against a chapel adjoining St Mark’s Cathedral of Cairo14 during a Sunday service resulted in the death of 29 Christians, while 49 sustained injuries15. The attack was particularly shocking due to the fact that St Mark’s Cathedral is the largest church complex in Egypt and the seat of the Patriarch of the Coptic Orthodox Church in Egypt. In February 2017, Egyptian Christians were forced to flee the North Sinai Governorate as a result of violent attacks by Islamic militants affiliated with IS, who singled out seven Christians as their targets in separate attacks. Although no group claimed responsibility for these attacks, it is believed that a militant group affiliated with IS (and which released a video vowing to increase its attacks against Christians) was behind the murders.
Although they did not received the same amount of press coverage in the international media as the killings in Sinai, there have also been killings targeting Christians in Cairo and Alexandria in 2017. For instance, World Watch Monitor reported that five Coptic Christians were killed within two weeks in Cairo and Alexandria.16 The victims were killed by slitting their throats and in all instances valuables in their possession were left behind indicating that the motive for the killings was not robbery. The report indicates that at least one of the victims, Youssef Lamei, received threats from Salafist Muslims before the attack. 17
In April 2017, in one of the most gruesome and deadliest attacks against Christians, 45 people were killed and 78 injured when two Coptic Orthodox churches were bombed on Palm Sunday.18 One of the attacks occurred inside a Coptic church in the northern city of Tanta and resulted in the deaths of 28 people during worship. The other attack occurred in Alexandria, when a suicide bomber trying to gain entry to a Coptic church-service blew himself up at the entrance and killed 17 people.19 IS claimed responsibility for these attacks.20
At the time of writing, the latest attack by IS took place on 26 May 2017, in which 29 Christians were killed and 23 were injured.21 The victims were Christians who were travelling to a monastery in the Minya governorate south of Cairo. In this attack (for which IS has taken responsibility), the assailants ambushed the buses heading for the monastery.22 According to eye-witnesses: “As many as 10 masked attackers in three SUVs stormed the bus, dressed in military uniforms, and demanded that the passengers recite the Muslim profession of faith… Then, the gunmen opened fire.”23
The Islamist insurgency and IS in Sinai
As has been pointed out in the earlier section of this article, for most of the attacks mentioned, IS in the Sinai has claimed responsibility. The IS affiliate in Egypt, also known as the Sinai Province group, is considered to be the most active and dangerous jihadist group in the country.24 Before it changed its name to Sinai Province and pledged allegiance to IS in 2014, the group was called Ansar Beit al-Maqdis (Supporters of Jerusalem) and it is believed that it has been active in the Sinai region since 2011.25 The group initially operated mainly in the Sinai region and targeted security checkpoints and army personnel in the area.26 Recruiting from the local Bedouin population, who are angry at the government’s neglect of the region, as well as their perceived marginalisation, the Sinai Province group is believed to have as many as 1,500 active members.27
Since the end of 2016, there seems to have been a clear shift in the strategy and focus of the group. Initially the group’s objective was apparently to drive out the security forces of the Egyptian state from the sparsely populated northern Sinai, with the aim of turning it into a province of IS. However, since December 2016, Egyptian Christians now seem to be the main target of the group. In fact, in the video in which IS claimed responsibility for one of the attacks, IS described Christians as its “favourite prey” and called on its supporters to attack Christians across the country.28 Some analysts suggest that this shift in strategy is due to the losses IS has incurred in other parts of the Middle East.29 According to these experts, IS is trying to establish a new front, as it is losing ground in Libya, Iraq and Syria.30 According to one analyst: “As the Islamic State comes under pressure in Iraq and Syria, it has to show movement on other fronts… One of them is to demonstrate that it is still fighting a sectarian war.”31
As part of its effort to turn Egypt into its next battleground, IS seems to be intent on fomenting a religious conflict and destabilising Egypt. Some have expressed concern that the recent spate of attacks by IS could inspire similar attacks by radicals throughout the country, even if they are not formally affiliated with IS. Commenting on the possibility that extremists inspired by IS could start a violent attack and attempt to drive out Christians, an Egyptian human rights researcher has observed: “It could easily happen in small villages because the attacks will be seen to have achieved their aim in Arish”.32 Therefore, in all likelihood, IS will continue attacking Christians in a very violent fashion. Some reports indicate that the group has established a network of cells in major Egyptian cities.33 In its own public statements, IS has made it clear that it intends to keep up its attacks against Christians, without relenting, and that it would like its supporters and sympathisers to carry out similar attacks against Christians.34
Although the Egyptian government has been trying to suppress the insurgency in northern Sinai and defeat IS there, so far these efforts do not seem to have been particularly successful. The government has been carrying out an intensive military campaign called Operation Right of the Martyr since September 2015.35 It also declared a state of emergency after the Palm Sunday attacks on the churches in Alexandria and Tanta.36 Furthermore, after the attack on Christians travelling to a monastery on 26 May 2017 in the Minya Governorate, the government has conducted air raids in Libya on what the Egyptian government said were camps used by jihadists for training.37 However, security experts have noted that the Egyptian authorities have not been successful “in penetrating the new Islamist cells that threaten Egypt’s cities – or, at least, in stopping them from carrying out coordinated attacks on churches”.38
Voices from Egypt
According to Egyptian Christians39 interviewed for this report, the recent spate of violence (since December 2016) has to be seen in a wider context, taking into account the fact that antagonism towards Christians and the persecution of Christians is not something that only a small group of radical Islamists engage in. Several Christian leaders have pointed out that these widely reported violent attacks are taking place within a context where Christians are treated as second-class citizens and subjected to various forms of persecution in their everyday lives. They also underscored the fact that the spread of intolerant and extremist teaching within mosques (and even in some of the most respected institutions of Islamic higher learning, such as the Al-Azhar University) is exacerbating the problem. Thus the recent violent attacks can perhaps be seen as a more extreme and deadly expression of the general intolerance and fanaticism that pervade large segments of Egyptian society.
On this issue, one Egyptian church leader observed: “It is society at large and not just the militants. The pressure is in the wider society among neighbours, colleagues, classmates. Christians are seen as inferiors, infidels, blasphemers and are often excluded and discriminated [against].” Such deeply rooted anti-Christian prejudices and intolerant attitudes seem to be prevalent in society and are manifested in various ways. For instance, another church leader recalls an incident in which a Salafist came and locked the door of a newly opened church with a set of chains. The pastor states: “The police were not willing to do anything and the church has been closed for a whole year.” Such forms of persecution by ordinary citizens provide the context in which the more violent forms of persecution occur. Underscoring that the more violent incidents do not occur in a vacuum, another Christian leader says that “the culture of society at large is intolerant and discriminatory”. Another Christian worker notes that the teaching of the Islamic “kafir” (infidel) doctrine encourages intolerant behaviour and even violence against Christians. Another leader observes that the persecution of Christians has got worse since the 1970s, a time when fanatical Islamists “were given freedom and platform, access to the media, enabling them to become thought-leaders in society. Since then the attitude of mutual tolerance has been eroded”.
Almost all of those who were interviewed also agree that the problem of Christian persecution is more prevalent in rural areas, as opposed to major cities like Cairo or Alexandria. Many attribute this to socio-economic conditions, such as unemployment and lack of education. In parts of the country where there are limited opportunities for education and employment, such as Upper Egypt, society seems to be more susceptible to the rhetoric of radical imams, who preach intolerance and even violence against Christians. The fact that such remote parts of the country are less governable, i.e. relatively less amenable to governmental control and authority, also means that they provide a conducive environment for fanatical teachers to encourage the persecution of Christians without much hindrance.
The Christian leaders interviewed for this report also emphasised that the forgiveness and love that has been manifested by Christians in the aftermath of the recent horrific attacks, such as the Palm Sunday attacks in April 2017, has created a very positive impression among many Egyptians. Underscoring the importance of such a response, one leader said: “We need to respond to hatred with love because that is what Jesus taught us. The weapons of the Church are love, mercy and forgiveness.” In addition to demonstrating forgiveness and love, Egyptian churches are responding to the rise in persecution with a focus on prayer. Another leader pointed out that “some churches are preaching love and reaching out to radical Muslims in poor areas of the country, helping them out in action. They are helping the poor with a spirit of love … making a difference in the provision of education and health services.” Another pastor interviewed for the report said “churches are focusing on prayer. There is a movement of prayer, not just collectively but individually”. While many leaders have pointed to prayer as one of the ways in which Christians in Egypt are responding to the violence, the leaders have also pointed out that there are many Christians who are frustrated, angry and confused; and that many Christians who have the possibility of leaving the country are considering emigration. The leaders have also noted that the teaching and history of the Coptic Orthodox Church, which emphasises martyrdom, has proved to be a source of strength and courage for many Christians.
As far as the response of the government of Egypt is concerned, most of the church leaders interviewed were of the opinion that, although the government has tried to tackle the Islamist insurgency and has expressed its intention to provide greater security for Christians, there is a lot more that needs to be done. The leaders value the government’s effort to provide shelter and some material assistance to the Christians displaced from Sinai and also President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi’s strong statements denouncing “fanaticism and extremism” in Islam and affirming the right of Christian Egyptians to live without fear.40 However, there is also frustration with the level of security and support the government has provided. Some Christian leaders also wonder whether the government is really in a position to address the causes of the problem and root out radicalism. For instance, President Sisi has called upon Islamic leaders to teach tolerance and moderation, and his administration has also indicated its intention to put measures in place to combat religious fanaticism. However, some Christian leaders have expressed reservations as to the extent to which such measures will be effective, particularly given how deeply rooted the anti-Christian prejudices and intolerant attitudes in Egyptian society are.
Commenting on how Christians outside of Egypt could express support for the Church in Egypt, the leaders interviewed for this report stated that more than anything they need the prayers of Christians all over the world. The leaders have also expressed their view that Christians in other parts of the world could also provide material support, particularly for Christians who have been displaced from northern Sinai. When it comes to advocacy, some Christian leaders have expressed reservations. Foreign advocacy has the potential to reinforce the tendency of some Egyptians to perceive Christians as being more aligned with Western powers than the Egyptian state. Therefore, the Christians interviewed expressed the need for caution and tact in advocacy campaigns that are intended to advance the cause of persecuted Egyptians. However, with this caveat, most of the leaders seem to agree that advocacy on behalf of Egyptian Christians is one of the ways in which the Christians and churches all over the world could manifest their solidarity with and support for the Egyptian Church.
Commenting on the future prospects for Egyptian churches and Christians, the church leaders interviewed for the report believe that a dramatic improvement in the situation is unlikely. While some leaders fear that the situation is likely to get worse, others think that the situation will more or less remain as it is for the foreseeable future. Commenting on what lies ahead for Egyptian Christians, one stated: “I think God is trying to teach us something and bring unity to strengthen us. I think we will face more persecution. We need unity and prayer… The persecution is only beginning.” Another leader concluded: “Things are likely to continue as they are. There could be a slight improvement, but not much. The problem is deeply rooted and for there to be change, there needs to be a concerted and consistent effort. This would take lots of time. We need to change minds, attitudes and beliefs… I do not see a remarkable change on the horizon.”
Conclusion
As one can infer from the discussion above, Egyptian Christians are going through a turbulent and difficult time, in which they are facing a determined, hostile and violent enemy that is intent on staging horrific and cruel attacks against them. Such attacks are occurring within a context where daily life for Egyptian Christians means facing regular discrimination and pressure from society at large because of their faith. Although the administration of President Sisi has signalled its intention to improve the overall situation of Christians and ensure their security and rights as citizens, delivering on these promises has proved to be much more difficult than making them. Facing such trials and persecution, Egyptian Christians are showing a great deal of resilience and courage in loving those who hate them. To strengthen the resolve of Egyptian Christians and to show solidarity with them, Christians in the rest of the world should provide their support to the Egyptian Church in any way they can. Such support includes prayer, material assistance and aid, as well as advocacy on behalf of Egyptian Christians who are suffering from intense and persistent persecution. If the enemies of the Church have their way, there will not be an Egyptian Church to speak of in the future. Therefore, for everyone who cares about the future of Christianity in the Middle East, this is too important an issue to neglect and there should be a concerted effort to be of assistance to Egyptian Christians in any way possible.

Five-year-old Indonesian Christian girl Trinity, who was badly injured in a bomb attack on a church yard in November 2016, is healing well, her father told World Watch Monitor. After completing the first phase of treatment in China last month, she is soon to return for a second phase.
Trinity and her friends were playing outside Oikumene Church in Samarinda, in Indonesia’s East Kalimantan province, when an Islamic extremist threw a Molotov cocktail near them. The explosion killed two-year-old Intan, while Trinity (3 at the time), Anita (2) and Alvaro (4) were severely injured. Alvaro, now five, has already had 17 operations and is currently seeking advanced treatment in Malaysia, as his healing progress has been slow in Indonesia.
At a trial in September 2017, the man who threw the bomb received a life sentence. Juhanda bin Muhammad Aceng, 32, reportedly wore a black T-shirt with the message “Jihad Way of Life”, as he threw the bomb from his motorbike. He was previously convicted of terrorism offences in 2011 and paroled in 2014. He was arrested again in 2014 after he was found with an IS flag. Four others, who had pledged allegiance to IS and were involved in the incident, received prison terms of between six and seven years.
In this video, shared with World Watch Monitor by Trinity’s father, the little girl is pretending to play the guitar and singing “I am happy to [be] God’s child”.
Nigerian Christian who lost husband in Fulani attack: ‘I returned to encourage other women to do the same’

March 29, 2018 By World Watch Monitor Nigeria Adamawa, Boko Haram, Fulani herdsmen, Muhammadu Buhari, Nigeria Hanatu Solomon and her daughter in Shaforon (World Watch Monitor)
Shaforon village in north-east Nigeria’s Adamawa state is all but deserted. Residents fled to the bigger cities of Numan and the state capital, Yola, when the village was attacked by Fulani herdsmen in December.
Hanatu Solomon, whose husband died during the attack, is one of the few to have returned. She says she hopes to rebuild her life.
“Leadership is by example,” she told World Watch Monitor during a visit to Shaforon, in the Numan local government area, on 21 March. “l returned so that other women will be encouraged to do the same. We can’t desert our ancestral homes simply because we have been attacked – that will give our enemies victory over us.”
Solomon, 46, is a leader in the Lutheran Church of Christ in Nigeria, and one of few women, and even fewer men, to have come back to the village. She is one of the many women made widows by conflict with the herdsmen.
“When will the killing stop? It is either Boko Haram insurgents or herdsmen killing our people, [who] are mostly Christians,” she said. “Many Christian women have lost their husbands. Our children cannot go to school again when our husbands, the bread winners, have been massacred.”
A mother of five, Solomon says the government seems unwilling to tackle the herdsmen, despite the brutality of their attacks.
“Most Christian women are raped by herdsmen when they launch an attack on their villages,” she said. “Some women feel they must hide out of disgrace; other women become pregnant from these murderers.
“I believe these gruesome killings of the men by the herdsmen are attempts to wipe out generations of Christians. If a man is not alive to get a woman pregnant it means his lineage will not continue.”
